Top Driving Tips in Germany
When driving in Germany, there a few key things to remember:
- Pay close attention to traffic signs and signals. Many Germans describe their streetscape as a “sign forest” (Schilderwald) due to the abundance of traffic signs. Learn more about German road signs here.
- When no speed limit is posted, German authorities ‘suggest’ a speed of 130 kmh (80 mph).
- You can only pass another car in the left lane. The right lane is for slower vehicles, and overtaking cars in the right lane is illegal.
- Always check your rear view mirror carefully when pulling into another lane.
- When fueling in Germany, gasoline is Benzin. Running out of gas on the Autobahn is dangerous and will get you a ticket.
- In most German cities, you’ll have a good selection of parking facilities. There is on-street parking as well as off-street parking lots (Parkplatz), above ground garages (Parkhaus), and underground garages (Tiefgarage.)
- Drive on the right hand side of the road. (The driver sits on the left hand side of the car.)
- Talking on the phone while driving in Germany is illegal, and seatbelts must be worn at all times.
